Here's a (hypothetical) look at how the women's entrants in the 2011 NCAA Fencing Championships compare, based on their official "Fencing Strength Factor" (sort of an individual RPI) for the 2010-11 college season. In some cases, this listing can provide a relative comparison when looking at how various fencers end up finishing at the NCAAs. Unlike in the NCAA Regionals, there are no actual seeds used for the NCAA Championships.
(Note – There may be quirks in these numbers, such as two-time NCAA runner-up Noam Mills being #9 on this list ... again, these lists simply help for a possible comparative look that is based on the individual fencer results from the college season – dual meets and Regionals).
In the men's competition, the 12 men's foil All-Americans included 10 fencers who were among the top-12 leaders in FSF (eight of the 12 men's epee All-Americans had top-12 FSFs entering the NCAAs, while eight of the men's sabre All-Ameicans also were on pace for such a finish based on their FSFs) ... that all adds up to 28 of the 36 All-Americans parlaying a top-12 FSF "hypothetical seed into a top-12 All-America finish.
... As can be seen below, team leader Notre Dame has the strongest collection of women's competitors – on paper, that is (total of 30 when adding up the six fencers' hypothetical seeds ... followed by Ohio State's 55, St. John's 60, Penn State 62 and Princeton 64 ... Harvard has only five women's entrants, with a total of 53 when adding up their FSF comparative rankings).
